One province’s perilous poll

Kasaï Central is scarred by famine, militia, cult and government violence, none of which is likely to ease before elections take place

Until the Kamuina Nsapu revolt erupted two years ago, the province of Kasaï Central had been peaceful. All that changed when the Kamuina Nsapu militia, led by a would-be traditional leader Jean-Prince Mpandi, burst on the scene. Mpandi was quickly killed by the national army, the Forces armées de la République démocratique du Congo (FARDC), but the militia fought on, attacking the provincial capital of Kananga in September 2016, and later spreading to other territories and provinces via secret initiation ceremonies.
