The fight for the ANC’s soul

Ramaphosa must appeal to the left to win a mandate for liberal economic reforms. It’s not the only paradox here

The African National Congress's strategists do not doubt the ruling party will emerge from the May national and provincial parliamentary elections by far the largest party, but the size of the vote has key implications for how it will rule. Internal polls by the ANC's leaders foresee a win with only 45-48% of the popular vote – strongly down on the last election – which means that alliances will be necessary to continue governing in the provincial assemblies, and possibly also nationally.
