The success of the Prime Minister’s reforms depends on how he manages intricate regional and ethnic power struggles

Abiy Ahmed was one of the star attractions at the Davos circus. Yet after leaving the World Economic Forum with the applause ringing in his ears, more down-to-earth political machinations still faced him at home. The first item of business on his return from the Alps was a dust-up involving Mustafa Muhammed Omer, the progressive new acting president of Somali region, who was threatening to resign after his appointments had been blocked, apparently by Abiy's finance minister, Ahmed Shide, who also happens to be the head of Somali region's ruling Somali People's Democratic Party.
