Campaign plumbs the depths

The war of words between politicians is becoming more and more frenzied as polling day nears with no obvious favourite

The result of the 21 May general election is now anybody's guess, as President Peter Mutharika of the Democratic People's Party (DPP) and his main rival Lazarus Chakwera, of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) go into the final weeks of campaigning with all guns blazing. The third main presidential candidate, Vice-President Saulosi Chilima, and his United Transformation Movement (UTM), is joining in the bitter round of mutual accusations of electoral fraud, in both this and previous elections.
