Dancing the third-term tango

Condé appears prepared to crush massive opposition in order to secure a third term of office, regardless of the dangers to society

The idea that President Alpha Condé would get the required two-thirds parliamentary majority to change the constitution to allow him to seek a third term has always been far-fetched. That, his opponents say, explains his lack of urgency in calling legislative elections, which were due in 2018 but may now be held as late as October 2020. Most believe they would result in a hung parliament. Instead, the 81-year-old Condé wants to move straight to a referendum to change the constitution to allow him to stand again for the presidency.
