Frelimo’s belated cry for help

Regional security bodies have been criticised for not doing more about the Islamist insurgency but Maputo was reluctant to sound the alarm

The crash of a Bathawk microlight aircraft belonging to the Dyck Advisory Group private military contractor (PMC) in Mozambique on 15 June has thrown a spotlight on a topic Maputo and Pretoria would prefer to keep hidden – the status of this force in Cabo Delgado province. The aircraft, which can be armed and used in a ground-attack role, was operating against Islamist insurgents in the province when it suffered a technical failure and struck the ground, seriously injuring the pilot, a source close to DAG said. Reports that the pilot had died were incorrect, the source added.
