Raila's weak grip

The perennial presidential candidate wants his 'handshake' to propel him into State House. But others have their eyes on the prize

The third anniversary of the 'handshake' of reconciliation between President Uhuru Kenyatta and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga passed with muted celebrations. Orange Democratic Movement leader Odinga spent the day in a Nairobi hospital suffering with coronavirus, though he was discharged several days later with instructions to rest and self-isolate at his home in the wealthy Karen suburb of the city. That was an appropriate metaphor for the fragility of a pact that has reshaped Kenya's political alliances but has left open the question of who will succeed President Kenyatta at elections next year.
