Don’t show us the money

Kenyans worry that the government is leading donors on a familiar dance as it continues to increase borrowing

In the dog days of President Daniel arap Moi's reign, Kenya acquired a reputation for borrowing from the International Monetary Fund and other financial institutions after promising economic reform, before reneging on its commitments, then using the funds for political projects. After a reprimand and a hiatus, another agreement would be signed, often with the support of Moi's western backers. Kenyan economists with long memories fear President Uhuru Kenyatta's government could be repeating the same pattern.
