With his rivals bogged down in court trying to salvage the Building Bridges Initiative, Deputy President William Ruto has re-emerged as the man to beat in next August's presidential elections. In the meantime, the increasingly ugly campaigning on both sides bears eerie reminders of the run-up to electoral violence in 2008, when 1,500 people were killed and 600,000 others driven from their homes.
