New coalitions, old faces chase counties

A mix of business people and political jobbers are eyeing parliamentary seats and plum county governorships

The sharpest focus is on the presidential election battle between Raila Odinga and William Ruto, but the 9 August elections will also see some fierce contests in the national assembly and in the 47 county governments. A chaotic party nominations process, complicated by the unwieldy coalitions that support Odinga and Ruto, has resulted in a record number of independent candidates for seats in the National Assembly, county assemblies, senatorial and gubernatorial seats.
