Back into the Fund's embrace

The IMF is at the centre of geopolitical rivalries and calls to reform the international financial system as debt pressures rise

The simultaneous but separate visits of IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to Zambia on 23-24 January point to rising concerns and international tensions around Africa's debts. 'Fragmentation will make it harder to resolve sovereign debt crises, especially if key official creditors are divided along geopolitical lines,' wrote Georgieva in her blog on the IMF website on 16 January.
