Seizing the day in the South

To succeed, the new government must be more than a triumphant army

The Government of South Sudan (GOSS) is waiting to be born. Its formidable task is to build a country from scratch and according to January's Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) (AC Vol 46 No 2). It will be doing so in conditions that are among the most inhospitable in the world in a war-ravaged land, most of whose people are displaced and weak from hunger and disease. Watching from the North with malign intent is the National Islamic Front, which hopes that a failure of the GOSS will kill off Southern dreams of a referendum and eventual full independence from the North.
