The Pharoah's long adieu

President Hosni Mubarak, 78, promises far-reaching constitutional changes in 2007. He also pledges to serve Egypt as long as ‘there is breath in his body’. Obviously, he doesn’t plan to retire soon. Officials of the ruling National Democratic Party say the aim is to strengthen parliamentary and cabinet powers to a French-style system. Official opposition parties picked up only a handful of parliament’s 444 seats in the 2005 elections.
