Zambia's big new investments

India's Vedanta Resources has pumped nearly US$1 billion into Konkola Copper Mines. KCM incorporates four mining companies: Nchanga Mine in Chingola, Konkola Mine in Chilabombwe, Nampundwe Mine in Lusaka and the Nkana Smelter and Refinery in Kitwe. With its annual turnover of $750 million, more than 10,000 workers and nearly 4,000 contractors, KCM is Zambia's giant. Its Finnish-designed, $300 mn. smelter is due to start up in 2008. Its $400 mn. Konkola Deep Mining Project (KDMP) involves a new concentrator and deepening the existing mine.
