Reluctant Herero

The campaign for a fourth, so far unconstitutional, five-year term for President Sam Nujoma is increasingly orchestrated. It ranges from support from an influential group of Herero traditional leaders to text messages to mobile telephone subscribers. Opponents of a leadership bid by Foreign Affairs Minister Hidipo Hamutenya fear that his victory would mean domination by the largest Oshivambo sub-group, the Kwanyama. They regard the fourth-term option as the only way of preventing this (AC Vol 43 No 25).
