Giant steps

Mallam Nasir el-Rufai's student friends called him 'Giant'; he stands some five foot seven inches tall. These days he is more commonly known as 'Bulldozer', because of his reputation for demolishing illegal buildings since he was named Minister for the Federal Capital Territory in 2003. He was a driving force among the team of reformers during President Olusegun Obasanjo's second term: Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Education Minister Obi Ezekwesili, anti-corruption czar Nuhu Ribadu and Director General of the Bureau for Public Enterprise, Irene Chigbue.
