Darfur deadlines

Western troop contributors fall behind schedule while Khartoum expels Western diplomats and aid workers

The United Nations has missed its first deadline for deploying peacekeepers in Darfur - not because of African Union recalcitrance but because non-African governments failed to offer specialised forces by the 30 August deadline. As Africa Confidential went to press, only Norway and Sweden had offered, jointly, any of the key units for aviation, transport and logistics which Africa cannot supply. Concern was growing at the DPKO.
