Exit Pikoli, Chief Prosecutor

Factions in the security services are fighting their own battles as the contest for the national leadership heats up

The suspension by President Thabo Mbeki of the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Vusi Pikoli, may foreshadow a constitutional crisis. At the very least, it embitters the contest for a new leader of the governing African National Congress, which formally opened on 1 October and will last until a vote at the ANC national conference on 16-20 December. Furthermore, it exposes turf wars among the state security departments, which reflect the struggles within the ANC and its trades union and communist allies.
