The heart of the matter

Pastor Robert Kipchoge Birgen of the African Inland Church in Chepsiria is an Oskar Schindler of the North Rift, a man who saved the lives of people hunted because of their ethnicity, which was not his. On the evening of 31 December, a day after the Electoral Commission of Kenya had announced the disputed results of the presidential election and triggered off nationwide violence, about 90 Kikuyu people sought refuge in the church compound. Birgen, a Kalenjin, took them in and protected them, putting his own life in danger.
