The debate over the International Criminal Court's charges against President Omer Hassan Ahmed el Beshir (see Pointer) has focused on the ICC, the fractious peace negotiations and the regime's capacity for revenge rather than on the crime of genocide with which Omer is charged. The Islamist government's responsibility for the crisis is highlighted in an interview with a former Janjaweed leader, a transcript of which Africa Confidential has seen(i). His story is consistent with those of other Darfur and international witnesses.
