Among the survivors

After months of speculation, President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua has sacked half his cabinet but retained several of his old associates and surprisingly kept on a few of the worst-performing ministers, presumably for political reasons. Among the survivors are Finance Minister Shamsudeen Usman, formerly a director of the Nigerian Central Bank under Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, who remains central to economic strategy. Yet on many day-to-day decisions, Usman is outflanked by the President's Economic Advisor, Tanimu Yakubu Kurfi, who was Finance Commissioner of Katsina State when Yar'Adua was State Governor.
