Abyei arbitrage

The Permanent Court of Arbitration's 22 July ruling, which redrew the boundaries of the disputed Abyei area, affirmed that all the area's major oil fields and the Nile oil pipeline would remain under the control of the Khartoum government. It is also a political bonus for the ruling National Congress Party (aka National Islamic Front) which can claim a commitment to the rule of law after its victory in an international court and can use the demarcation of the Abyei boundaries to delay further the national elections and the referendum on independence for Southern Sudan.
