Aziz's strong-arm vote

General Mohammed Ould Abdel Aziz's victory in the 18 July presidential election confirmed that the former Bataillon de la Sécurité Presidentielle commander turned coup leader will reinvigorate the hopes of putschists across Africa. Although the African Union has lifted sanctions and endorsed the election, the head of Mauritanian election commission, Sid'Ahmed Ould Deye, has resigned, questioning the 'reliability' of the vote.
