Leaving the door open

Eighteen months after the murderous clashes, the government remains ambivalent about trying the sponsors of the post-election violence

Kenya's politicians continue to obstruct the efforts of the International Criminal Court to try those most responsible for last year's political violence. This comes despite the recent hopeful pronouncements by ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo and former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, who was visiting Kenya on 5-7 October. According to Annan, both President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga 'unequivocally supported' the referral of the most serious cases of political violence to the ICC.
