Jackie Selebi on trial

Nothing is going according to plan with the prosecution for corruption of former police chief and former Interpol director Jackie Selebi (AC Vol 50 No 16). As he tries to exonerate himself, Selebi is uncovering a vast network of political and commercial sleaze which implicates some of the wealthiest business people and senior officials in the governing African National Congress. The latest problem for State Prosecutor Gerrit Nel is the disappearance of three star witnesses, including colourful Zimbabwean businessman Billy Rautenbach. All were due to testify that they had paid large bribes to Selebi to secure immunity from prosecution.
