Malema, mines and the youth league

As the African National Congress leadership tries to dampen factional rivalries, some are asking whether Julius Malema, the firebrand President of the ANC Youth League, has moved from being one of President Jacob Zuma’s staunchest supporters to one of his biggest liabilities. Malema, who once said he would die for Zuma, now says he will mobilise against any ANC presidential candidate who does not commit a future government to nationalising South Africa’s mines (AC Vol 51 No 3). Zuma knows that such a policy is anathema to his business friends but he can neither publicly endorse the strategy nor disavow Malema.
