The field gets more crowded

There is no shortage of candidates or political parties contesting the presidential election due early next year; the exact timetable (AC Vol 51 No 18) is under review after the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, last week called for more time to register an estimated 70 million electors. The first and perhaps most important stage of the battle is the race for the presidential nomination for the governing People’s Democratic Party. So far, it is the most heated race since the PDP was founded in 1998. Given its political dominance in the past three elections, the PDP candidate starts as clear favourite to win the presidentials.
