Johnson Sirleaf stands on her record

Voters are likely to favour the President but ex-football star George Weah could push the election to a second round

Strategy for the presidential and parliamentary elections on 11 October will dominate political life, with incumbent President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf tipped to win. Yet a strong push by opposition candidates may mean that she will have to fight a second round against the popular former football star George Weah, which again she is likely to win. Johnson Sirleaf has resisted pressure to dilute her campaign against corruption, which was reflected in the changes she made to her cabinet last month. Liberians want her to do more against corrupt individuals but she says that it takes more than ‘naming and shaming’ to fight corruption which is ‘systemic and societal. That means we have found it very pervasive all over the place – at high levels, external and internal.’
