Defying the democracy wave

The ruling party dismisses attempts by oppositionists to follow their North African counterparts

The opposition’s attempts to bring the spirit of North Africa’s democracy wave failed to bring the masses on to the streets of Luanda but still worried a government surrounded by speculation about the successor to President José Eduardo dos Santos. Using online social networks, posters and word of mouth, opposition supporters called for a rally on 7 March against the leaders of the ruling Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA). The posters called for an end to the 32 years of rule by Dos Santos and drew parallels with January’s overthrow of President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali in Tunisia (AC Vol 52 No 3).
