Opposition politicians are to boycott the presidential election due on 8 April, after Interior Minister Yacin Elmi Bouh banned all demonstrations, fearing a spate of North African-style democracy protests. Ismael Guedi Hared, leader of the Union pour l’Alternance Démocratique, organised protests in February and one that brought 30,000 people to the football stadium. Police fired tear gas and live bullets to disperse the protestors, killing at least one, and arrested over 300.
