Officials at Congo-Kinshasa’s state mining company Gécamines confirm that control of the Central Group of copper and cobalt mines around Likasi, (with associated facilities, including the super-profitable Shituru cobalt processing plant) is on the verge of passing to a little known Zimbabwean firm called Richpoint. It is owned by a Zimbabwean family, the Rautenbachs, who have been closely linked to Justice Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa; and Mnangagwa also manages business affairs for the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front. Richpoint’s Billy Rautenbach denies that any Zimbabwean minister has links to his company.
