After a turf war between mediators, peace has begun to break out
With attention focused on the Congo-Kinshasa war, the rebellion which broke out in Guinea Bissau in early June (AC Vol 39 Nos 13, 14 & 16) has already become one of Africa’s forgotten conflicts. The ceasefire of 27 July - after a few early violations - has been consolidated into a formal agreement, signed in Praia, Cape Verde, on 26 August, which notably reaffirms 'the public recognition of institutions and of democratic legality', and underwrites the maintenance of military positions which held when the ceasefire first began at the end of July.
