Mbeki's money men

The ANC's economic gurus are balancing market friendly and vote winning policies

The economy and its capacity to create jobs are the critical issues for the African National Congress in next year’s elections. Flanked by cabinet heavyweights Finance Minister Trevor Manuel and Trade and Industry Minister Alec Erwin, Deputy President Thabo Mbeki has assembled an impressive team of policy makers. Mbeki’s team is relatively youthful, convinced of its case for a tight spending and lending regime and confident it can win the political battle to carry those ideas through. A senior ANC official told Africa Confidential: ‘Nothing substantial goes through on government economic policy without Thabo’s direct say-so.’
