Spinning out of control

Four spin doctors vie for coverage on behalf of President Mugabe and his party as the battle over the next elections heats up

The official line from President Robert Gabriel Mugabe and the highest policy-making body of his Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front, the Politburo, is that elections must be held this year. That is the message that has gone out to ZANU-PF’s grassroots supporters.The dominant party’s problem is that its own negotiators, Patrick Chinamasa and Nicholas Tasunungurwa Goche, have agreed with the other member of the coalition government, the Movement for Democratic Change, a list of political and constitutional reforms essential to credible elections. Regional mediators from the Southern African Development Community (SADC), who keep a close eye on the negotiations, insist that they will not endorse any election unless there is agreement between ZANU-PF and the MDC on the ground rules.
