Shipping containers around West and Central Africa is twice as expensive as in other parts of the world. A private consortium now hopes to transform regional trade, with a service that would replace European shipping lines such as Denmark's Maersk and Delmas of the French Bolloré Group. Ecomarine aims to halve shipping costs, provided it can promote reforms in inefficient, corrupt ports, such as Lagos, and reduce tariffs across the zone.
