Nigeria and South Africa stand up

This year, for the first time, Africa’s two heavyweights, Nigeria and South Africa, were on the United Nations Security Council and both wanted to make their mark. The verdict is mixed. Nigeria did well, observers say, while most prefer not to mention SA backing the wrong horses in Côte d’Ivoire and Libya. Among diplomats, though, there is greater admiration for the lively South African team than for Nigeria’s, whom many see as placemen.
