Pre-millenial tension

A military adventure abroad and political squabbles at home

By sending Senegalese soldiers into Guinea-Bissau, President Abdou Diouf has muddied the pool of Dakar’s politics. The bitter rebellion in the southern province of Casamance made little impact on May’s parliamentary elections (AC Vol 39 No 8). In June, the army tried to seize power in neighbouring Guinea-Bissau and Diouf feared, with reason, that a successful coup might strengthen the Casamance rebels. He felt bound to support Bissau’s elected government but he may come to regret it.
