Rail to the chief

Ex-President Thabo Mbeki has taken issue with South Africa’s push to get Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma elected Chairwoman of the African Union. She defeated the incumbent, Gabon’s Jean Ping, prompting criticism that South Africa had used its position as a leading financial contributor to control the choice of the AU’s top job (AC Vol 53 No 15). Mbeki’s criticism will become public in a 6,000-word article for September’s The Thinker, a magazine edited by Essop Pahad, his close ally and a minister in his cabinet.
