Mugabe's Maputo success

Robert Mugabe and his Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) were pleased with the outcome of the Southern African Development Community summit in Maputo on 17-18 August. It had just begun when South African President Jacob Zuma was called home after the Marikana shootings (see Feature). In the absence of SADC’s mediator between Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, the summit fell back on anodyne resolutions.
