Zuma’s campaign pays off

On the brink of the ANC conference in Mangaung in December, incumbent Jacob Zuma has outmanoevered his rivals for the party presidency

African National Congress leaders are trying to stitch together a deal that would avoid a contest for the party Presidency between incumbent Jacob Zuma and Vice-President Kgalema Motlanthe at the party’s conference on 16-20 December in Mangaung (Bloemfontein). The proposal with the widest support so far is one that would allow Zuma to remain as ANC President until 2017 but he would make way for his deputy, Motlanthe, to stand for the national presidency in 2014. However, Africa Confidential understands that the Zuma camp believes they can still get their man a second term as President of both country and party.
