The President and his family do well out of – and squabble over – the tiny country’s massive oil riches

The elections on 26 May showed just how far President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo will go to stifle democratic opposition. The leading opposition party, the Convergencia para la Democracia Social (CPDS), which was barred from using state media and not allowed to protest, won just one seat in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. President Obiang makes no pretence of presiding over an open and tolerant political system. So now international investors are making no pretence of caring about the trouble a badly managed succession process could bring as Obiang prepares for his son, Teodoro ‘Téodorin’ Nguema Obiang Mangue, to take over.
