Boutef's miracle return

After reshuffles to the intelligence services and government, the President is unexpectedly back from the dead

Enfeebled by an illness that hospitalised him in Paris between April and July, and limited public appearances to stage-managed photo-shoots, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika began the political rentrée as yesterday’s man. As his boyhood friend and close aide, former Energy and Mines Minister Chakib Khelil, faced an international arrest warrant in August and the latest corruption crisis in the state oil company, Sonatrach, reached a new level of intensity, the Bouteflika clan was under intense pressure.
