Success needs succession

Mugabe may be approaching his 90th birthday but that does not make the naming of a successor more likely

The only certainty for Zimbabwe in 2014 is that the succession issue will not be resolved so long as President Robert Mugabe is still in control. It is widely agreed that no economic recovery or increase in foreign investment can take place in such an uncertain environment. Yet Mugabe and his coterie remain as determined as ever not to grasp the nettle. They seem set on continuing to favour one contender within the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF), only to switch to another if the first becomes too confident or presumptuous. No faction will be able to land a knock-out blow on another as long as this is the policy of the inner circle.
