Fears for the new regime

The new government has little time to assert its authority and end the sectarian slaughter. Some militants are even threatening to secede

Although two months have passed since the international military intervention began, the situation in Bangui has barely changed. Atrocities are still rife and life in the countryside is increasingly unpredictable. The selection as Interim President of Catherine Samba-Panza, a high-profile civil activist and supporter of women’s rights, gave an impression of progress to diplomats in Bangui and many people abroad (AC Vol 55 No 3, Danger, road works ahead). Yet in a government dominated by technocrats, the appointment of André W. Nzapayeké as Prime Minister was not as well received.
