Sudan

No mistake

Khartoum's surprise announcement of a month's break in the peace talks worries Washington. It had expected a peace deal for President George Bush to celebrate in his State of the Union Address on 20 January. The National Islamic Front had asked for 95 United States' visas, said reports. Bush had even telephoned chief NIF negotiator Ali Osman, Sudan People's Liberation Army leader John Garang and President Omer el Beshir to press for a last-minute deal. He failed. His speech didn't mention Sudan but one warning will be understood in Khartoum: 'some governments will be timid in the face of terror. And make no mistake about it: If they do not act, America will.'
