Southern rivals

Economic and military competition is growing between Windhoek and Gaborone

That some Namibian government loyalists are still bristling in the wake of President Bill Clinton's visit to Botswana shows the depth of animosity between these two Southern African states. Given his own official visit to Washington in 1995, President Sam Nujoma saw Clinton's bypassing of Namibia as a snub, we hear. Windhoek officials are also annoyed that Namibia has not received more recognition for its reconciliation policies which, they say, mapped a course for South Africa's transition to majority rule.
