After Yar'Adua

The death of a detained politician has focused attention on northern discontents

Whatever caused the death of gaoled Northern military politician Shehu Musa Yar'Adua'on 9 December, it has sent a powerful message that Northerners can expect no special favours from General Sani Abacha's military regime. The lack of any government announcement about Yar'Adua's death prompted his supporters to speak of government complicity or at the least, indifference, which allowed him to fall into a coma in Abakiliki prison before before being flown to the Ibadan teaching hospital where he died. On 14 December, thousands of Yar'Adua's supporters marched through his home town, Katsina, calling for Abacha to go.
