A sudden conversion

Almost overnight, KANU’s top brass have discovered the value of political reform

Using whips and clubs and firing teargas canisters, police broke up another demonstration demanding constitutional reform, this time at Nyahururu on 19 October. It was the latest in a series of opposition-police clashes that augur badly for the elections which have to be held before next February. Since the National Convention Executive Committee started campaigning for electoral reform this year, all but one of its demonstrations have been broken up violently.
