Embarrassing Biya

When Boko Haram kidnapped one of the wives of a Deputy Prime Minister on 27 July, killing 16 people in the process, it also unleashed the latent competition for the succession to President Paul Biya and caused him one of the most serious embarrassments of his 32-year reign. Paediatrician Françoise-Agnès Ali, aka 'Dodo' and née Moufouri, is married to veteran northern politician Amadou Ali, Vice-Premier in charge of Relations with Assemblies and a native of Kolofata where the attack occurred. Local religious leader Seini Boukar Lamine and five relatives were also abducted. The speculation now centres on how large the ransom may be.
