Banda rejects Cashgate claim

The man charged with stealing the most in Cashgate has said he took the cash to State House

Former President Joyce Banda appears a step closer to involvement in the Cashgate affair after the Anti-Corruption Bureau acquired closed circuit television footage shot at presidential offices during her tenure. The former People's Party (PP) official charged with fraudulently obtaining the largest amount of any Cashgate defendant, Oswald Lutepo, said in a radio interview that he had taken the money that he dishonestly obtained to State House for the then President. Banda has vigorously denied the charges, and immediately after the broadcast issued a statement to 'set the record straight'. Her press representative said, 'her political detractors are using Mr. Lutepo as a pawn to drag her in the mud in order to dent her reputation as a citizen of Malawi, wife, mother, politician and philanthropist.'
